Start with the Why

I have seen plenty of Simon Sinek videos during my leadership journey. I was reflecting on my motivation post and almost just added this link to a Simon video but decided that is a post unto itself.

We default to communicating about results first, then explain how, and perhaps never even talk about why. When you flip the script and start with your why, then move into how, then talk about the what, you are inspiring people to believe in your purpose versus believe your results.

This is useful as a leader because people really do want the why in order to be inspired and buy into your ideas. I have worked with engineers and they look at me as if to say, “Yes, Joe, we understand the changes you want to make to our project folders, but WHY?” Always start with why if you want people to understand what you are trying to do, because it is still up to the listener to agree with you or believe in your purpose.

Do you know what your purpose is?
